International Burlesque performers: Dita Von Teese
Dita Von Teese is an American burlesque dancer, vedette, model, costume designer, entrepreneur, writer, and occasional actress and singer. She is a multifaceted artist and a business woman at the same time, who was able to create an empire based on her perfect image, her glamorous outfits, her iconic performances and a range of products and merchandising linked to her idea of femininity, sensuality and beauty.
She started performing in 1992 and is thought to have helped reviving the Art of Burlesque and Neo Burlesque, which had a comeback when her shows and performances became more and more popular. She is now recognized worldwide as the Queen of Burlesque.
In her own words, she "puts the tease back into striptease" with long, elaborate dance shows with props and characters, often inspired by 1930s and 1940s musicals and films. Some of her more famous dances have involved a carousel horse, a giant powder compact, large feather fans, a filigree heart and a claw-foot bathtub with a working shower head. Her signature show features a giant martini glass.
